Is Alcohol a Fantastic Idea Before Your Display?
Imagine you have been invited as the after-dinner speaker at a local club or organization and they are serving wine with the meal. Should you partake? I would tell you to adhere to water or coffee or tea. While you might find one alcoholic drink or one glass of wine relaxing and also a great way of settling your nerves, I beg to disagree.
Some years ago, I was encouraged to speak to a group of female insurance brokers in their yearly meeting. The wine has been served with the meal. I had just one glass. Ironically, I drink very little alcohol but I could not imagine that one glass of wine could hurt.

Hurt it did because I lost my advantage. When I rose to speak, I had been too confident and that I experienced no nervousness. Prior to this engagement and in all the others who have followed, I encounter nervousness. I enjoy anxiety; I need one, as the public speaker, nervous since if you are not nervous, then I am concerned.
You will never be able to be that confident in a live performance - that one glass of wine gave me a confidence I did not deserve and I did not desire. I was not as focused and that I lost my passion for my subject because the adrenaline was not rushing to do its job. While I rely on anxiety to give me a border, to help take my demonstration to a completely new degree, the secret in dealing with it's understanding of how to control it. Whenever you're in control of your anxiety, you may learn how to let it work for you and not against you.
Later in my career, I was invited to speak to the executives at Labatt's Beer in London, Ontario. I had been offered a beer to drink through my demonstration. (That was a first!) I declined, but recall well my experience with the insurance girls.
Possessing that edge in public speaking, experiencing the rush of adrenaline is truly a blessing when confronting an audience. Avoid alcohol to maintain that edge. Trust me, your viewers will value your shipping much longer so.
